Achievements

Among the achievements of the Book and Periodical Council are the following:

• Establishment of the Canadian Children's Book Centre
• Establishment of the Canadian Telebook Agency
• Development and ongoing operation of the Book Industry Freight Plan
• Various publications
• Sponsorship of the annual Freedom to Read Week, and production of an annual information kit on issues of intellectual freedom
• Formation of the Canadian Give the Gift of Literacy Foundation
• Responsibility for the studies that led to formation of CANCOPY, now Access, the Canadian Copyright Licensing Agency
• Establishment of The Word on the Street annual bookfairs
• Administrative support for small and new organizations in the book and periodical field
