About the BPC
The Book and Periodical Council was formed in 1975 (as the Book and Periodical Development Council) to provide a forum for discussion for associations and to serve as a venue in which mutual concerns are addressed and projects undertaken for the benefit of Canadian writing and publishing. Each full member association appoints three delegates to Council and has one vote in matters brought before Council. Associate members may appoint one delegate with voice but no vote.
The purpose of the Council is:
- To increase the level of awareness and use of Canadian materials by the general public and in educational systems at all levels;
- To ensure that the public has an adequate and representative range of Canadian books and periodicals in sales outlets, library systems and educational institutions in Canada;
- To strengthen the book and periodical distribution systems in Canada;
- To support the development of new and existing Canadian-owned companies and encourage their growth and expansion so that they may become the major segment in each sector of the book and periodical publishing and distribution industries; to discourage the expansion of foreign ownership in all sectors of these industries;
- To improve market conditions and contractual arrangements for Canadian writers, and in other ways to enhance their financial rewards and professional recognition; to improve the promotion and publicity given to Canadian writers and their work;
- To encourage the development of writing and publishing projects that are of social and cultural importance;
- To improve the cultural and economic climate in which the Canadian book and periodical industries exist, for their enhancement and the enrichment of all Canadians.
